if the width is x, then the length is 2x - 6

P = 2 (Width + Length)

given the perimeter is 96

96 = 2 (x + 2x - 6)
48 = 3x - 6
54 = 3x
x = 18

width: 18in
length: 2(18) - 6 = 30in

Let the length be l and width be w

l = 2w - 6
2l + 2w = 96
or l + w = 48
Substitile 2w - 6 for l

2w - 6 + w = 48
3w - 6 = 48
3w = 54
w = 18
Since l = 2w - 6, l = 2(18) - 6 = 30

Width is 18
Length is 30

CHECK:
Perimeter = 18 + 18 + 30 + 30 = 96
2w - 6 = 2(18) - 6 = 30

p=2l+2w is the equation because in a rectangle the opposite sides of a rectangle equal eachother

from your word problem, l=2w-6
substitute this into the equation as follows
96= 2 (2w-6) + 2w
96 = 4w-12+2w
96 = 6w-12
108 = 6w
w = 18
since l = 2w-6 we can plug l in to get
l = 2(18) - 6
l = 30

96 = 2(30) + 2(18)

x = width
2x-6 = length
P = 6x-12 = 96
6x = 108
x = 18 = width
2(18)-6 = 30 = length
