Allways hang velvet inside out, and don't pack it into a packed closet.

For small spots or spills, try a toothbrush gently.

General cleaning--dry clean.

Real velvet is pretty tough, keeps out light and insulates in the winter. The stretchy knit crushed velveteen is not. It will stretch out from its own weight if you use it as curtain material. The biggest problem with velvet is that it gets dusty very quickly, and if you are not prepared to take your drapes down and shake them weekly, then another material might be a better choice. If you do decide to use the velvet as drapes, make sure that you iron them before you hang them, every crease will show if you don't. You MUST iron on a medium setting FROM THE BACK. If you iron velvet from the front it will melt all over your iron. Sewing velvet will need a heavy duty needle, the newer the better, and don't be afraid to try different shapes like circles and neck rolls. Square pillows are OK, but velvet likes to be trimmed in fringes and tassels, if you are going to use such a great looking fabric don't hold back on the accessories!

all my velvet pieces are dry clean only. and I usually hang them on padded hangers if they are blouses so that they don't form creases. and never iron them from the outside, turn the garment inside out and iron the inside.
