Unfortunately never. They have nothing to gain electorally, the anti Bush crowd( anti war, pro impeachment) will not go to the GOP and that's their only serious competitor in your corrupt money driven two party system.
By playing to the middle they might convince some moderate Republicans to change party, there are gains to be made. On the left people have no credible alternative so there's no need to cater to those voters and run the risk of alienating the "moderate" voter. The two party system drives all politicians to the middle and that's killing choice and anti Democratic. If there was an alternative left wing anti war pro impeachment party the Democrats couldn't do this.
There are issues like this on the right too like the anti illegal immigration. The GOP knows they have those votes locked so they play more to the middle when they are in power

What and go against the tactic of just Bush bashing and avoiding responsibility like they have done since 1994?
Darlin' if that is the reason you voted for a Democrat, to stand up and be counted you are going to be very disappointed.
Before the election they screamed Impeach Bush.
After the election- Pelosi said there will be no impeachment.
Before the election they said we'll pull the troops out NOW.
After the election- Well maybe there will be a few pulled out by March 2008.
Need I go on?
If I were a hard core Democrat, I'd be finding someone to run against the incumbent. Because the current crop inhales.

A majority does not work that way....once they put forth a bill the president will veto it and they cannot override the veto without republican help....which frequently doesn't come. Plus, frankly, there is also the problem of them appearing to not care for our troops. If they withhold funding for the war, the outcome appears to be that they don't care about our troops. If they push for the troops to pull out, they run the risk of appearing like they are vying for 'failure' or are too afraid to finish the job. Further, many feel in the back of their minds that this is Bush's war and if they better the situation under his watch, then his and republican approval ratings will increase, making it less likely that a democrat will be elected next year. Should they act, yes, but unfortunately I don't think they have the ba**s to do so.

I can see the answers here are definitely drawn on party lines. There are also responses that are rhetorical arguments cut from the un-educated "Mama taught me" fabric of follower-ship lemmings. I suggest that we work for a bit of centrism. I would like to see the two candidates from the Republican and Democratic primaries be from the moderate. If this happens there will be a better chance of activity and passed legislation in Congress. Far right and far left will both face opposition that renders their goals mute. We need legislators that have great diplomatic skill and know how to find compromise.
The Democrats don't have to stand up to Bush. His days are numbered. With no incumbent running this year - it will be easier to find a different middle ground.

never. They lack the intestinal fortitude to do things out of conviction. They are only motivated to act just enough to win an election. They are banking on fact that Bush in unpopular and so are republicans all because of mostly iraq fiasco. They figure if they buck Bush and another 9/11 happens, before the next election that the republicans will use it to smear the democrats...and in fact the GOP is very good at smear tactics. So democrats are hedging their bets...they are talking out against Bush, but not really going out on a limb...against him.

They are pushing bills. Bush will not pass them. There are only 51 Democrats in the Senate, and that is not enough for a majority vote, let alone the 2/3 required for a veto override. You cannot blame the Dems for not passing anything. Blame both parties for not working together in the interests of America.

How did you get the impression that the President does whatever he wants? You are vastly mis-informed and need to educate yourself before making a fool of yourself in public.
Why doesn't the Democratic led Congress get ANYTHING done? They have done less than any elected group in the history of our country's government since their rise to power a year ago. And, they want a 4 day work week instead of a five day work week?????
Do you even know who your representives are? I doubt it. Start reading.

They lied to all the people who voted for them and all the people who want change in our country so they could get their power back. They will give some more lip service to the next election for you gullibles so that they can have ALL the power. When will you quit voting for the socialists and vote an American leader with a vision for America and not a North American Union?

Why don't you try and stop Hitler and see if you can get the job done, that so many others are trying to do , he cheated twice and still sits in history as our 43 president and there's nothing you or I can do until he leaves office or Die maybe we should cheat.

Well, when you fund the war with one hand and wave the white flag with the other, there is not much time left to do change.
Besides; As dumb as Bush might be, he is obvioulsly smarter than the Democratic leadership. He's been leading them around by the nose for a year now.
