Ashley - an Ol' South sort of gentleman. ;) Or yet another little girl with a name that became hugely trendy back in the 80s, held on throughout the 90s, and already seems quite dated, despite its pitifully-clinging popularity. In other words, a lower-class sort of name.
Madeline - a quiet, intelligent, friendly little girl -- or grown woman ;) -- with a polite manner and good upbringing. Add in the very-popular Maddie nickname, which I see is planned (or used) here, and you have a classic, timeless choice currently fitting for nearly any personality, heritage or socio-economic status. In other words, not a name that would likely lead to assumptions (or stereotypes) either way. One of those interesting classics that ends up rising on the tails of a trendier, less traditional option (in this case, masculine Madison with the same Maddie nickname).

Ashley - many things come to mind ... very pretty little girl with long dark hair; a calm creek/river with beautiful wild flowers growing along the banks; just calm, peaceful and beautiful thoughts.
Madeline (ma-deh-line) - I picture the popular children's book character.
Madeline (ma-deh-lynn) - I picture Madeline Kahn, a very talented actress/comedienne with an unforgetable voice. She passed away in 1999, but many movies/tv series she was in are still run/played on various channels.

For Ashley, I can picture various things. I know a girl named Ashley, she is very smart, she isn't very good looking and she's pretty much a goody girl.
Madeline, I picture a cute girl and she's very friendly but kind of a trouble maker, like the real Madeline (movie).
