honesty ALWAYS works best.
just say that you'd like to go an enjoy a night with co-workers and not have to entertain or babysit... or whatever your reason is.
they may not like it, but finding out later that you lied will be a lot worse.

Tell the truth, that you'd see this more as a business opportunity to mingle then a social occasion and you'd rather attend solo to stay focused on business.

Why are you hiding something or trying to hide the other because your embarrassed?
simply put - short of lying to your other-not much.
Try making an excuse to the boss about not being able to attend will probably go over better.

well... doesn't seem as if he is much of a significant other if you are wanting to ditch him to hang with others for a night. and that is a shame.. tell him the truth. bad enough you do not want to take him, no sense lying about it as well.

If there is a very good reason why you don't want him to go then be honest with him. Otherwise this is your life partner so don't you think its time to start including him as such?

if you are invited with your spouce there is no way to without making your coworkers gossip about you. If there wasn't a specific invite for them then jusrt don't tell them.
