I love every ones answers but i want to take it old school, don't wash clothes unless you have full load and line dry when warm over the tub in fall and winter, same thing for dish washer and don't use the heat dry, plug every thing in to power strips with one outlet used by a night light that comes on only in dark that way when you leave the room even if every thing is off you will know if you have left something plugged in.

The average household has 20% of their electric bill in their lights, so turn off lights that arent being used, or put in energy efficient bulbs.

Hot water heaters use a LOT of electricity keeping water hot. Here, you have 3 options
1. Turn down the hot water heater.
2. If you have the option, switch to gas. It is a lot cheaper. This holds true for heaters and stoves as well, and usually come with tax rebates.
3. A tankless hot water heater is the best option. It gives instant hot water, with out having to keep water hot that you are not using. They can run as low as $500 or $600, and go up. Several places offer tax rebates, but you will need to check on that. If you live in an area that offers tax rebates for gas because of energy efficiency, you can always request one for the tankless system... it is a lot more energy efficient (especially the gas models).

Change the filter in your furnace every month. Close the storm windows or cover windows with plastic covers on inside. Get your furnace cleaned and gas pilots set. Put weather stripping around doors.
