Do you think the bendy buses will get the chop and we'll get our Route Masters back??

I fail to understand Londoners.

You complain that the trains on some Underground and Tube lines are over twenty years old. You complain about the exhaust fumes from heavy vehicles.

Yet you want the return of the Routemaster bus. A bus which first saw the light of day in 1954 - that is FIFTY THREE years ago. There is not a single Routemaster bus remaining which is younger than 35 years old.

The engines are an old style technology which would fail all modern standards required for exhaust emmissions.

As much as i love the route master i can't see them comming back the bendy buses are very good they've been around for many years in cities like Amsterdam the Route Masters are unsafe and with the ease of getting on and off you can easily have anaccident if you try and jump off when the bus is in motion

I drove a Routemaster bus from Cricklewood to Victoria on the No.16 route for a year '84-85.

It was so easy to drive, but driving was a team effort and you needed an experienced bus conductor. People were jumping on and off all the time even at speeds of up to 20mph and my conductor saved a few of their lives by being on the platform to save them.

Health and Safety and the EC would not permit their return, but as a former driver I have a great affection for them, they were very easy to drive, very reliable and plenty of room in the cab. Only fault was the brakes which were often very spongey and could not be expected to stop the bus very quickly and they definately were not safe over 30mph.

But I still remember the Routemaster with a certain fondness...

Sadly no. Most Routemasters have now been scrapped, or sold to preservationists or to companies running tourist bus services in other countries.
A small number of Routemasters remain in service on the following sections of routes in London:
Route 9 Albert Hall to Aldwych
Route 15 Trafalgar Square to Tower of London

Doubt it. Routemasters were dangerous as well and it would cost far too much. People seems to remember the route masters with rose tinted specs - they were horrible and threw you all over the place when turning and stopping. As for the backloading rush of people. Awful.

I don't think they will bring in any more bendy buses, but they won't be replaced by Routemasters.

I dont think so. They served well enough but are not really suited for current traffic conditions.

The old telephone boxes are another matter. The French have bought loads of them and are currently in use by France Telecom.

That 'thing' they replaced them with is simply awful.

As lovely as the Routemasters look, there are no facilities for getting wheelchairs on and off, or room for people with pushchairs.
