I drive a 2001 VW Beetle that is nearly 100,000 miles old. When I went for my safety inspection, there was a problem with one of my wheels having too much play in it because of a tie-rod. The problem wasn't bad enough for my car to fail inspection & they didn't offer to fix it then. Does that mean that it is safe enough to drive for a while?

Steering feels normal, but every now & then when I make a sharp left turn (like 90 degrees @ intersection), it feels like one of my tires turns more than the other, kind of like slipping on ice only roads are dry. One time it happened when I was going faster, it felt really bumpy & made a thumping noise, but the other times it didn't. Do I need to get this fixed ASAP, or is it ok to wait a while if I just remember to go slow when turning left? It passed inspection so it ought to be safe enough, right?

Would this effect on gas mileage? I drive a TDI with a manual transmission (gets 50+ mpg) but I haven't gotten that lately.

I would recommend fixing the worn part ASAP. There is a safety issue & it will rapidly wear the tire. I've seen them bad enough to actually fall apart, then the will need to be towed or you could have a serious crash.

yes, it affects gas mileage, and yes u should get it fixed ASAP. poor steering could lead to a wreck, much cheaper to fix it now than down the road.

Why chance it? Your health is worth forking over a couple hundred to get it fixed and it can't hurt your gas mileage to get it fixed either.

fix it as it can wear out the tires rather quickly and after it is fixed up will need a front end alignment also
