I bought my betta and I have the air filter. It is so noisy and strong. Then there are bubbles at the top. I had it for 2 weeks and the aquarium was extremely cloudy like really bad. Plus, the color of the gravel is getting on top of the glass that covers the top part and its foaming and staying on the plastic cover. The tank just seems really gross compared to the bowl I had him in before where I could clean the bowl once a month and everything was neat and clean. I wanna take out the filter and leave the little opening for oxygen to go in. Help!

hmm, you don't want to buy a bigger tank, but you expect from us to give you a truthful answer
well, yes, you should still have a bigger tank, and yes you should have a filter in there as well as a heater which keeps the temperature around 78-82 degrees
Here is an article on the right habitat of a betta, read and decide yourself what's best for him

Hope that helps
Good luck

A 10 gallon tank is not a good idea. Betta fish prefer to stay in small areas. And you only put one per tank or else they will fight. Heater is not required. Ask the people at the pet store about the ghost shrimp. From what I can tell, you should either get mollys, which are great fish that come in different shades (black, white, zebra) and you can keep multiple and combine male and females (this will highly result in mating though.) Or I think you should get guuppies. They are just like bettas except smaller. They can come in many beautiful colors and look amazing in tanks. I dont know if they can live with a ghost shrimp though. With guppies you can put many together and combine male and females. They will also love the 10 gallon tank!

A betta in a 2 gallon tank absolutely needs a larger tank. While 2 is better than one, the fish will do much better in at least 5 gallons. He can swim, can have plants and caves to swim around and through, and have a higher quality of water. While a filter is not absolutely necessary for a betta, you need to change 25% of the water every other day if you don't have one. A heater is necessary and the water added needs to be the same temperatuer and treated for chlorine and chloramines if it's not well water. Letting it sit out will not get rid of the chloramines, a by-product of municiple treatments. Stress Coat is a good product for treating it and helping the fish deal with the stress of the water change.

Betas are labyrinth fish which means that they are able to breath from air at the top of the tank which means that they do not need air filters in a tank. It is helpful though to have a filter because it will cut down on the sludge in the tank and you will not have to do as much tank cleaning. But remember, betas don't like a lot of current in their water or on the surface.

I'm sorry that I can't help you with the noise factor.
Get a control valve that you can fit on the airline hose so that you can control the rate of the bubbles realeased into the tank.
I refrain from colored gravel because of the same problem. Get some gravel that looks more natural than colorful. Fish can't tell the difference since they are colorblind. The color gravel is more for us humans to 'ooh' and 'aah' over.
I also know of a product that will help with your 'cloudy' situation.....it's called Algone. I have used it in my old 10-gallon tank plenty of times.

My suggestion for a betta is a small filter and a heater. I wouldn't use an air filter it just creates more water movement that a betta doesn't need. A betta does need a filter and a heater. I don't know your tank setup, but that's my suggestion.

Bettas breathe from the top of the tank. They don't need air bubblers. They like their water still as well, so filters bug him as much as they bug you. As long as you're cleaning the tank regularly he'll be fine. You'll know when he's happy because he'll blow a nice bubble nest at the top of the tank!

Beta's do not require air filteration and they are much happier in smaller tanks unless you can mix him with other fish which is rare.
