Hands down, it has to be Jim Thorpe. The guy won multiple gold medals, and he also played professional baseball AND basketball. He played runningback, defensive back, punter, and kicker, and he was head and shoulders above the competition at the time. He won gold medals in the pentathlan and decathlon. Additionally, he entered the high and long jump competitions, placing 4th and 7th respectively in each.

He could run the 100-yard dash in 10 seconds flat, the 220 in 21.8 seconds, the 440 in 51.8 seconds, the 880 in 1:57, the mile in 4:35, the 120-yard high hurdles in 15 seconds, and the 220-yard low hurdles in 24 seconds. He could broad-jump 23 ft 6 in and high-jump 6 ft 5 in. He could pole vault 11 feet, put the shot 47 ft 9 in, throw the javelin 163 feet, and throw the discus 136 feet.

Name another NFL player with a resume like that.

Walter Payton. He could walk on his hands across a football field faster than most people can run. If brains were a huge factor, then maybe Roger Staubach. A world class athlete and very smart. He owns about half of Dallas right now.

bo jackson/deion sanders/jim thorpe. really tough call between the three. i guess i would go with jackson here because of his unheard of combination of speed, quickness, and power. he may have been the best overall athlete in not only the NFL but MLB history as well.

The things Jim Brown did on the field was amazing. Defenses were happy to see him retire.
