All free agents are processed though the Secret Ranking Formulas -- which apparently use slightly different statistics for each player group (2B/SS/3B, 1B/OF/DH, SP, RP). The top 20% of each group is ranked Type A. The next 20% is ranked Type B. The rest are Class C (Class D was eliminated in the most recent CBA). Depending on the class, the team losing a free agent will gain different types of compensation (in the form of draft picks) from the signing team.

Players are ranked by league to adjust for the DH effect.

I did overlook catchers -- their own group -- and that was a good, um, catch.

There's a lot of anger which I won't claim to understand. Do try that nap suggested, or have it out with Mommy why she stopped breastfeeding too early. In the finest tradition of idiot tv newsblather, the "attack the messenger, ignore the message" theme quickly goes nowhere, but perhaps that is where these people want to be or feel they are already.

But, I have my own, real children to wrangle, and this is not my problem.

I'm not sure why Barrett is considered a Type A free agent, other than that the system used to evaluate free agents is really messed up.

There's an article at BP that describes the formula better than I could do it. The whole system seems like it needs an overhaul:

Well an A type free agent is someone who will sign with you quickly, who doesn't just consider your offer and take other, somone who is commited to playing on your team. It is also a good player in hitting, fielding, speed, and team work. You want one who will sign for a long deal and one that doesn't just care about money, but winning.

Once again Chipmaker (like many top contributors) misses the entire point.

He doesn't mention a Catcher in his "so called stats" and claims he's answering the ?.

Please slap him on the face for being the world's most ignorant moron. The question was about quality NOT how fast you can google a moronic answer.

The real answer? = Those players aren't worth shiet. And if someone thinks so that's capatilizism to a fault, however we have the right to make money just like baseball does, so STFU and deal w/ it.

#1 they AREN'T. So plz get that thru your head. A-Rod or Babe Ruth, etc belongs in that class. Barrett can't even agree w/ his pitcher (Zambrano) witch is why Big Z hit him in the face. (way to go Z)

So what was it your asking again? It makes No sense.
