I highly suggest not investing in credit cards. You don't need it. If you already have bad credit, no one is going to give you a card. And if they do, the interest will be so high that it's not even worth.
Live within your means. Don't spend money you don't have by using a credit card.

Unless you actually need credit for something, why get a credit card at all? If I were you, I'd do two things: go ahead and get a credit card; don't purchase ANYTHING big with it, but only something small once a month, and pay it off each month. The only thing it should be for is to re-establish your good credit.
The other thing you should do is get a DEBIT card on your bank account, and use that for your transactions. It keeps you from having to walk around with a lot of cash, and you can't overdraw it like you can with checks. I have a debit card, and I haven't written a check in YEARS!

read the fine print carefully for any card you do get, dont pay start up cost or a yearly fee, or high interest
the best card if your credit is bad is to open an account at a credit union, then apply for a secured card, save up the couple of hundred dollars you will need (it goes into a savings account ) these cards you can get with very low interest, around 7 or 8 percent, and no other fees , if you are late they will charge you a late fee, but leave the account open
yes its hard to save up that initial money, but it is well worth it,

Bad credit stays on you for 7 years here in Texas. You can always pay your debt and have them write a letter to the Better Business Bureau (Or whatever) to tell them you paid off and to remove you from the black list.
A word of advice “#1”
, credit cards are for those who are poor and need to live like rich. There is a price to pay and most do not realize what this prize involves.
The best way to have a clean credit is to own no credit. If you have cards, don’t use it.
Give yourself a limit - if you can afford a 300 dollar monthly payment (tops) then spend no more than 300 dollars and treat it as a car payment. Pay it off.
Also, if you like something and you can not write a check for it, it means you should not buy it. You can not afford it!
Note:
I put it all on credit to avoid cash and checks but I also know I can pay it off at month's end. It works for me.
You can "finance" no-payment-interest rates for one year "sales". Just make sure you are ready to pay it off at years end because, oh boy.. If you only knew what is going to hit you!
A word of advice "#2":
Consolidate. Get a credit card to send you checks and pay off everyone and stick to ONE monthly note paying off all those checks.
DO NOT buy anything until it is paid off...
I hope I helped..

Although i don't have either chase card, i do have to say that everyone screws up at some point. it is a part of life. I made some bad mistakes in the past and had to file bankrupcy. i am not proud that i had to do it, but i really had no other option. 6 months later i was getting credit card offers. you have to watch out because some of them will charge you super high fees and start up costs. I would check with capital one, they have given me two cards since my bad days. also hsbc discover card gave me a chance too. live and learn.

I would say a ChaseFreedom Visa because of the freedom to switch between cash and other rewards. Just make sure you budget and pay this one on time. Your credit score will begin to go back up after each month of an on-time payment.

If the ELAN credit card is available in your area, it's a good one to re-establish your credit. Yes, it is a secured card with a low limit, but if you're having trouble paying your bills, a low limit is probably a good thing.

You might want to consider GreenDot. It's a credit card you secure with your own money. I used it for two years. But they are useable anywhere a real card is.
