What are the rules for using degree acronyms after your last name?

I cannot find protocol on this item...Do you have the right to use the acronyms after you receive your diploma? When should you indicate degrees received? Should it be used only in related industrial fields?

This isn't well defined and there are many who argue on all sides of the debate.

In academic settings, it's very common. In business settings it's common with the MBA and JD but not many others (even doctorates).

In the medical field it's common and almost essential to separate the practitioners.

Doing 'Jane Smith, BA' might seem a touch pretentious but it's correct usage. Usually, the postnomial is only common once one has an earned doctorate and in a few cases where the master's is considered the terminal or professional degree (such as the MBA). Even then, people generally look at this as haughty behavior and frown on it.

Of course, this is a relatively recent situation. It wasn't that long ago when appending a BA or BS was commonplace. Then the people who don't have a degree started feeling like we educated folks were "showing off" and since we don't want to hurt the uneducated people's feelings.... we can't go around telling people that they didn't get an education and we did... well, you see what I think of this. ☺
