No websites, just an answer. A river delta is the area downstream on the river that would fill with water if the river flooded. Deltas usually fill with water or mud in the spring during the snow melt or heavy rains. The soil is usually rich in nutrients and makes the best farm land.

A delta is a landform where the mouth of a river flows into an ocean, sea, desert, estuary, lake or another river. It builds up sediment outwards into the flat area which the river's flow encounters (as a deltaic deposit) transported by the water and set down as the currents slow. Deltaic deposits of larger, heavily-laden rivers are characterized by the main channel dividing amongst often substantial land masses into multiple streams known as distributaries. These divide and come together again to form a maze of active and inactive channels.

Low-lying plain composed of stream-borne sediments deposited by a river at its mouth.
Deltas have been important to humankind since prehistoric times. Sands, silts, and clays deposited by floodwaters were extremely productive agriculturally; and major civilizations flourished in the deltaic plains of the Nile and Tigris-Euphrates rivers. In recent years geologists have discovered that much of the world's petroleum resources are found in ancient deltaic rocks. Deltas vary widely in size, structure, composition, and origin, though many are triangular (the shape of the Greek letter delta).

all the mud , rocks and stuff that flow out of a river because of erosion from the moving water pile up at the end of the river as the water flow of the river stops carrying them. where the stuff piles up it forms a mass of stuff and that mass of stuff is refered to as a delta. in an ocean it is usually a good place to surf as it forms sand bars for the waves to break on.
