There are certain triggers such as el nino/nina, there are correlations between increased cyclone activity and el nino years - which can also be linked by global warming.

If you are in an area prone to cyclones, your best bet is to take precautions like plan an escape route - involving a secure shelter, have an 'emergency pack' ready (keep some canned foods, priceless photographs, flashlights, batteries, radio and bottled water).
