Taken my answer directly from Osama Bin Ladin, the extremists want the U.S. to elect a president who will more likely turn to appeasement of the terrorists verses the direct engagement policy of the current administration.

During the 2004 Presidential Elections, Osama issued the statement that he would attack the people of the "Red States", referring to the color used by most news agencies and the USA Today to represent states won by Republicans.

Any Republican since they will continue the nation building plans of the Bush administration which emboldens terrorists and makes their job of recruiting new members so much easier.
