George Vezina (played for the Habs) became the first goaltender in NHL history to record a shutout on February 18, 1918. The score was 9-0 against the Torontos.
I am going to guess for debut: Terry Sawchuk.
Alright, I looked it up and I'm wrong. I will begin to hail now.
EDIT: Ok, Hockey Mayor of Yahoo Answers, in the beginning I missed the word debut.
How about Hal Winker? Debut on November 16, 1926 with a shutout?

Georges Vezina lost his first three NHL games, and only recorded one shutout (his 9th game) in the NHL's debut season.
The earliest goalie I can think of was 1955, Robert Perreault in Montreal.
Wayne Thomas did it in 1973 for Montreal
Yann Danis did it in 2004 for Montreal
Jussi Markkanen did it in 2001 for the Oilers
Michael Smith did it last year for the Stars (Michael also recorded a shutout in his first AHL game too)
I'm sure other's did it as well, but I can assure you that Georges Vezina didn't perform the feat
Haley, Vezina was the first to record a shutout, he did NOT do it in his NHL debut though
That now makes Winkler the earliest I am aware of, but the websites I looked at made it seem humdrum, suggesting it wasn't the first time
I just talked to somebody in stats and Hal Winkler is indeed the first goalie in the NHL's history to record a shutout in his NHL debut, and it has been done a dozen times since.
