I've seen studies that show that the average woman uses slightly more words than the average man on an average day but even that 'slight' seems to be counter-intuitive.
I can believe the assertion that men talk more but I also believe that its more significant when and why people talk. This study (or at least the brief summary that I read in the link) doesn't really give much background info or how the test was conducted so its hard to interpret the data.
One point of interest that doesn't seem to be addressed here is what is the talk for. I suspect that if you excluded 'work' related talk that you would see a different picture.
I strongly suspect that men use language more for functional purposes (mostly work) while women use language more for social purposes (friends and family).
The notion that women are more 'talkative' comes from the stereotypical scenario where the man comes home after work and doesn't really feel like talking to his wife and she feels upset about it and wants to talk (its not because he doesn't like to talk in general but rather because he has already talked a lot that day and is all talked out)

I'm skeptical about the study. LOL Seriously, I have six kids; 3 girls and 3 boys and while some of the boys were relatively talkative, the girls could out talk them every time. Also, I know plenty of men who don't talk a lot, but very few women I could describe that way.
I do think that men and women communicate differently. When I talk about a problem, my boys always assume I'm looking for an answer to a problem, while the girls assume I just want to discuss the situation. When talking to the males in my life, I've learned to preface things with the statement, "I'm not looking for a solution, so just listen"... They do, but the guys look a little confused. lol

anthropologically speaking, we are the only species that has developed such a detailed method of verbal communication. therefore it doesn't make much sense to claim men or women talk more than each other. sure, other animals can communicate but verbal communication is limited to a small range of different noises...unlike what we as humans can produce. i think it is a case by case basis as to who talks more than who and as a woman i can tell you that i hardly talk at all but so does my boyfriend. on the other hand i have male friends and female friends that can out talk me any day. in opinion this study was a waste of who-ever's time.

The study had to be wrong. I have rarely seen a man that was more talkative than a woman.
