Check out the ignition system. Hairline cracks in the distributor cap or the coil or deteriorated insulation on the spark plug wires. Any one or a combination of these will allow moisture to cause arcing. The arcing robs energy needed by the spark plugs and results in the engine misfiring and running rough. Remove the distributor cap and use a good light to check out the inside. Any small black lines, replace it. For the coil, look especially closely at the tower neck where the wire to the center of the distributor cap plugs in and then at the rest of the phenolic cap for any sign of cracking. Check the plug wires for signs of cracking or oil residue.

I dont think its your MAF sensor, but im not too sure. (a code reader wont help too much on an OBD-1 car with a symptom like that. OBD-1 systems have VERY broad error codes.) i broke the MAF sensor on my BMW and was forced to drive 2 weeks. My plugs got destroyed, my oil was full of gas, i got about 5 miles to the gallon, and my cats burned up. When was the last time the ignition coil was replaced? The ford 3.8 V6 is known for head gasket failure as well, but i dont see how in any way its possible for the car to run that long with a blown head gasket. Try smelling the exhaust (i know, it sounds crazy), if it smells sweet its your head gasket, if it smells like fuel your engines running rich. I would try checking and cleaning some basic parts first. Start with the injectors, ignition coil, fuel pump (check pressure), MAF sensor, O2 sensor and make sure there arent any frayed or crossed wires. I dont see why it would be anything else. Does it seem like a noticeable amount of MPG and HP are missing? And, can you hold the vehicle at a speed (any speed above 50) without sputtering?

Check your wires and cap/rotor if you have one, most ford and mercury cars get this from time to time.

sounds like may be wet inside of the distributor cap. check that. are the coil wire

Well one solution might be that water is getting into your fuel somehow. Do you have alot of rust? Any holes in the fuel line or tank? Water in your fuel will not burn fuel well. You might try to add some HEAT. HEAT gets rid of the water in the fuel. You can get a substance like that at any auto store.
