I was flipping thru US Weekly at the local book store over lunch and saw one pic of a black rapper in the entire mag...it was a sidebar of sean piddy or diddy what ever his stage name is ...a couple years ago every other page had one on it....has good taste come back in to favor?

Hip Hop is far from dead. But like anything else in the media, only the worst gets the general public's attention. Hip Hop is an entire culture of music, style, speech, and urban mindsets, rap being only one important part of the culture.

Right now the best of Hip Hop is represented by conscious rap artists--true artists--like Mos Def, Twalib, Common, Saul Williams, Jill Scott (when she crosses over into rap music, from her usu. neosoul vibes), and more. Why don't you look into the music and poetry of some of these artists? Why don't you pay a visit to some "underground" poetry clubs that feature excellent rap artists? Here in NY, for example, the Bowery Poetry Club comes to mind. I'm sure there are similar venues wherever you are.

Don't let the mainstream or commercial media fool you into thinking that there are no rap artists who exercise good taste. Expecting US Weekly to offer a fair representation of Hip Hop or rap is like expecting Fox News to offer a fair representation of current events. Open your mind and your ears. You might be surprised. Peace...

Hip Hop isn't dead. It's a billion-dollar industry!
However the very timely messages that it carried back in the day with its pioneers (Funk Master Flash, Kurtis Blow, Afrika Bambaata, Sugar Hill Gang, etc...) died a long time. It's all about excess and commercialization these days. If you want to hear REAL hip-hop, go out to those struggling rappers, the ones that aren't on tv. Go listen to the people that are truly "trying to make a dollar outta 15cent" (Tupac--Keep Ya Head Up).

Hip Hop as well as any genre is always better as an underground scene. The hungrier the artist and the less Corp. and Sponsors can diminish art. The Better. Hip Hop is alive and well.

Rap may be dying, but the underground nature and roots of hiphop will keep it alive forever.
