A root vegetable grows underground.

Examples being:

Carrots
Potatoes
Rutabaga
Sweet Potato
Celery Root

Carrots are the best example of a "root" vegetable. They are Tap roots to be exact.

Potatoes, on the other hand, grow in the ground just as carrots do but are not root but tuber vegetables.

It grows under the ground silly! If it were from a tree it would have a branch NOT a root! Like radishes, and carrots!!!! U r just too cute!
