If we did, wouldn't it send a message to the middle east that we are not at war against Muslims?

It's unfortunate, however it is unlikely a practicing Muslim would be elected president any time soon. However, there are not any candidates that receive any coverage that are Muslim.

By the way, Muslim is a religion, not a nationality. As such it is not really appropriate to say Muslim-American. We don't say Baptist-American...

I don't think it will happen at this point in time, even if the Muslim-American could somehow be proven to be the most competent candidate in our history. This is still a nervous, racist country overall (although most of it is subconscious).

Would I personally vote for a Muslim American if I thought he or she were the best candidate? Yes.

As far as whether or not it would send a message: I don't think it would. Since one has to be born in the US to be a presidential candidate, it would just look as though we thought our Muslims are okay, while the others are still dangerous.

A strange question since there are no Muslim candidates running for President. But if there were, I would say no at this juncture, most Americans would not vote for a Muslim at this time for our highest office. Our country, despite whether it's right or not, has permanently mixed up politics and religion in the same bowl. Since so many Americans are paranoid about Muslims in general now it is extremely unlikely a Muslim could successfully run for President.

Probably not at this time. The vast majority of American voters have only the muddiest picture of the various cultures and existing realities of the Islamic world. A long process of education and familiarization will be needed. That process should begin now in hopes of heading off hysteria, worsening rhetoric and inane foreign policy and military actions.

Absolutely not! Not today or ever. This country was built on Christian values not Muslim values. In my opinion; if you are not of a Christian denomination you should not be able to run for President. This country already has a set of core values and beliefs...enough with all the "new" melting pot ideas.

It doesn't matter since none of the current candidates are Muslims. Besides not ALL Muslims are radicals any more than all Christians are Baptists or Catholics or radical evangelical holy rollers.

No.

In all seriousness.... its not the religion... its the position. Look at Iraq. The people killing the civilians daily are... other Iraq citizens.

Its not the Muslim Religion... its the loon fringe of it that hates everyone that is not them.

A Muslim isn't running for president

Wouldn't it be nice to see a agnostic Ayatollah though?
