JK Rowlings apparently announced it in an interview....and, just because? Fictional character, does it matter?

Regarding the "debate": It's JKR's world, she said it, and that settles the question. End of discussion.

There were actually two things that prompted JKR to say that:

1) In a Q&A session, JKR was asked if Dumbledore had ever been in love. That's when she said that he was gay and had been in love with Gellert Grindelwald.

2) An early version of the script for the Half-Blood Prince movie had Dumbledore reminiscing about a girl he'd known in his youth. While reviewing the script, JKR struck out that bit of dialogue, and next to it wrote "Dumbledore is gay" to explain why it wouldn't work.

Yes she admitted it in public that Dumbledore is gay. I saw it in an author's blog and had to check it out myself and it was true so sad.... But still I totally saw it because who spends an entire summer with a member of the same gender and disappear for a while.... Then again you could but it would be totally awkward....

Jk rowling said in one of her interviews that she always felt that one of her characters were gay. The whole relationship between dumbledore and grinewald.

JKR: My truthful answer to you... I always thought of Dumbledore as gay. [ovation.] ... Dumbledore fell in love with Grindelwald, and that that added to his horror when Grindelwald showed himself to be what he was. To an extent, do we say it excused Dumbledore a little more because falling in love can blind us to an extent? But, he met someone as brilliant as he was, and rather like Bellatrix he was very drawn to this brilliant person, and horribly, terribly let down by him. Yeah, that's how i always saw Dumbledore. In fact, recently I was in a script read through for the sixth film, and they had Dumbledore saying a line to Harry early in the script saying I knew a girl once, whose hair... [laughter]. I had to write a little note in the margin and slide it along to the scriptwriter, "Dumbledore's gay!" [laughter] "If I'd known it would make you so happy, I would have announced it years ago!"

Yes, this is true. During one of her readings here in the US people were allowed to ask questions. One girl asked, 'What about Dumbledore's love life?' JKR was honest in saying that he was gay.

But this shouldn't matter. He NEVER did anything to anybody thoughout the books. He is still one of my favorite characters. If you do not agree with his morals, that is fine. But people need to be opened minded and accept this fact.

He is still wise and is a fictional character.

I doubt it. Although J.K. Rowling said that I never got that impression while reading the books. Saying Dumbledore is gay is a waste of a great character and J.K. Rowling only said that for popularity.

because JK Rowling was asked about Dumbledore's sexuality as its never mentioned in the play. She said in reply that 'he is homosexual'
Don't know why though...

considering that he is a fictional character I refuse to believe that, (not that I have a personal problem with gay people) but I hate people who make comments out of nowhere just for publicity and attention, I think that she was feeling that the rug was getting pulled from underneath her so she just wanted to say something that would keep her standing still. And her comment or declaration of Dumbeldore was way out of context, it had nothing to do with the plot, just because there was no record of him being married or having any children.. Mcgonagol had no family history nor did Sprout, so are they gay as well???

I know what JK said but... aren't you supposed to kinda envision the charectors of a book the way you the reader wants them to be. That's part of what reading is, letting the story get to you like that so that the charectors are actually somebody you know. Maybe....?

To help people be more tolerant. Everyone fell in love with him before we knew and now that people know I think they'll realize that it's nothing to hate.
