If you know that you will be doing a lot of plain black and white (monochrome) printing, then go with a laser printer. You can find many excellent low-cost b/w laser printers today.

However, if you will want to do any type of color printing, then you'll need to go with an inkjet printer. The major draw-back is the cost of the inkjet printer replacement cartridges that often can exceed the cost of your printer.

I actually use both a monochrome laser and an inkjet. The cost is affordable to have both. I bought a nice laser printer for under $100.00 and my inkjet was less then $50.00 with its rebate.

Inkjet ink costs less, but you will need it more often. Also, you can usually get color inkjet printers really really cheap. Inkjet printers also tend to be much slower.

Laser is faster, but unless you want to spend some buck$ (not likely for a student) you're going to be printing black only. The cartridges can be pricey; before you buy something, find out what kind of cartridge it takes and how much it is. The inexpensive Dell printers are (among many others) notorious for this...a $200 printer can sometimes have a $150 cartridge!!

For a student, I'd recommend sticking with HP for a laser and either HP or Brother for inkjet. We use the HP 3000 series multifunctions a lot -- they use the 12A and 12X cartridges which go for $70 or so if you buy genuine HP but you can get refills for $50 or so...and as a home/student user that $50-$70 cartridge will last a looooooooong time.

If you must have color, go inkjet, but for reliability, speed and overall cost of printing on a per-page basis, get a laser.

EDIT -- HP 1000 series are pretty good too and go for $200-$300.

Almost always a laser. Compared to inkjet printers, lasers are faster, and they're also cheaper to use on a cost-per-copy basis. The only downside is that lasers tend to be more expensive. So with a laser, you spend more at first, but save money later.

If you do a lot of printing and have a few hundred dollars to spend on a printer, get a laser. If you only do a little printing, you can get by with an inkjet.

Most students just need a 20$ inkjet printer. Pointless to spend more if you are talking about school work. Just need to print out documents.

Higher end inkjets are more photo friendly and offer higher DPI which is what you want for photos.

Laser printers which can start as low as 100$ are a decent option if you are just printing out documents but in volumes. So if you need to print out 300 page thesis papers constantly, its more cost effective and user friendly and the 100$ printer generally comes with 1 50$ tank anyways to start off with. Cannot print any color though. Decent color laser jets start at around 300$ or so but cannot handle photos or higher resolution items as well.

I would just go with inkjet. If you dont care about quality then it doesnt matter since there really isnt that much difference. I have an hp printer and its amazing but mine is used for photos also but none the less, I think the quality of my printer is actually better than a laser printer when printing out just word documents.

I'm not sure if things have changed now, but I would recommend a lazer printer because it makes more professional looking documents for resumes and formal papers to be turned in. Inkjet is good for making photos but doesn't have the dpi(dots per inch) capability that a lazer printer does.

Laser printers tend to be more expensive, however are much better for printing out large volumes of stuff, especially black and white.

Inkjets are much cheaper, and if the student is going to live in a dorm, they are easier to move/store due to their smaller size.
