I agree with most of the above answers. However the key is to make a budget, live on it and monitor it. Plug in your pay schedule (weekly, every two weeks, twice a month {which is different}, or monthly), and your weekly, monthly, quarterly & annual bills, and a column for remaining cash. Set up a form with columns for these catagories. Then start cutting expenses & monitor your progress. VERY IMPORTANTLY, deposit your whole pay check into a checking account and cash one check per week for weekly cash expenditures and make yourself live on it. DO NOT make ATM withdrawals for lunches, sundries, etc every few days. People who do, never know where their money went to.

Don't spend it.
Create a budget, and stick to it.
Put your money in a savings account that you don't have an easy access to (meaning no local atm machines, a money market or cd, or an online bank)
Save your reciepts when shopping so that you really get a feel for your spending habits.
Cut coupons
Shop at thrift/consignment stores or in bulk

cut out unnecessary expenses (lattes, movies, lunch out). Lower your cell phone plan to necessary minutes for emergencies only, carpool, drop your premium movie channels, turn down the thermostat, create a budget for food/misc and STICK TO IT. Write down everything you spend money on for a week (everything including vending machine at work) to see where you are spending. Then contribute to your company's 401K and have it deducted from your paycheck so you never see the money.
