You might want to consider Oxford (City).

It may be like an hour between or even two.

According to Google maps the distance Birmingham-London is 120 miles, and should take about 2 hour 15 minutes.
But both towns are known for traffic jams, so expect to be in the car for 2 hours each, every day, if you travel by car.

This is a link to the railway travel planner for England: http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/
The train trip should take 1 hour 30 minutes, so a big improvement over the train.

There are not many stops on this trip, basically only Milton Keynes is about half-way.

This is a 'new build' town, with not too much English tradition, but it might be a good place to live.
Or you could look for a place to live not too far from there.

You could also choose to live near Birmingham, and have your partner travel farther, as travel to London might be the easier one. But it does depend on where in town the actual workplace is.

Milton Keynes ! Some people love it there. Around 45 min train journey.
