Hi. I work in a grocery store with a man in his early 40s (I'm 20) who is VERY bossy, hyper, irritable, impatient, rude, and poses somewhat of a threat to us employees. He and I are both regular employees, so we are both on the same level--except he has worked there a lot longer than I have. Here's a list of how he is:

--made a threats to me like "don't you mess with me!!" and "you don't want to ever see the bad side of ___".
--swung a steel bat and hit an employee during baseball game
--says to me endlessly "HUSTLE, HUSTLE, HUSTLE!!" and "you're not hustling enough!!"
--becomes very irritable over accidents

I've discussed this with my parents and they believe I should mouth off right back at him and intimidate him back. Also, I'm a lot taller and more muscular than him.

How should I retaliate so he won't ever "mess" with me again?

Even though he says he has a 'bad side', I want to make him be AWARE that I have a 'bad side' myself.

Any info is appreciated!!! Thanks!!!!

Same scenario. I worked in a grocery store and a man who worked there was a bully to myself and other employees. He worked there for a while, so most were afraid to confront him. He also liked to 'help himself' to coffee and would 'trim a slice' from the deli when he was hungry, etc. I would never slice meat for him to do that (he wasn't a deli worker, I was, but he intimidated others to do it for him) and one day at the time clock, he 'chest bumped' me and told me if I knew what was good for me I'd comply with what he wanted or 'I'd be sorry'. I went right to management. Told them that I would not be threatened on my job by anyone, no matter how long he worked there, and if they refused to do anything about it, it meant that they allowed it and therefore allowed a hostile work environment which is against the law. Don't be irrational, don't go in upset and yelling, etc. Be polite, make your case, and ask them what they intend to do about it. Also if you state to them you will leave AND make a complaint to the state labor board, be prepared to follow up and not make idle threats. Less than 24 hours later, I was called to the office to speak with the regional loss prevention person, who documented the threat and had a store walker from another store follow this individual on the store's survelliance system (to keep this from the other employees). When he was caught quite literally threatening another employee, the other person was called in and asked what happened and that they had it on tape so they needed feel they had to 'cover' for this guy. When it all ended, at least 4 other people confirmed what I had said and he was released from his job. He was told that any contact with any of us would result in legal action being taken. So, go to management. If this goes on under their watch and they don't take action, they are responsible as well.

Talk to your boss. If this guy has been there a long time and you just started and ya'll are on the same level then he already feels threatened by you....feels like you will replace him being just as smart and much younger. Good Luck :)

He's trying to intimidate you because you're young. Show him you may be young but you aren't stupid! Go directly to management and very calmly and politely tell them what has happened. Momatad had the best answer for how to go about it.

Maybe you should try talking to him 1 on 1 and tell him that you don't like the way he treats you. If that doesn't help then you should talk to your boss.
