We all know what/who makes up Gen. X......but what is the name (or is there one) for the next generation, and what are these people characterized by?

I think it is wonderfully terrific for those who refuse to be 'classified'. Congrats.
However, it's just a question about generations.

The generation after Gen X is usually referred to as 'generation Y', though they are sometimes also referred to as 'millennials'. This generally includes those born between 1981 and 1995.

Because Gen Y has been raised constantly among the fruits of high technology, they are utterly familiar with it, experiencing little of the alienation that typified Gen X. Instead, they are 'high performance and high maintenance' - they are accustomed to having a world at their fingertips and are lost without access to the Internet, Ipods, Blackberries, and so on. This freedom of information also dilutes any ideas of authority; there is no single correct point of view to them and anything might be challenged.

Link 1 seems a pretty user-friendly summary. Check it out.

It should be also noted that some people cram a transitional generation between X and Y, sometimes called the 'MTV generation'.

Generation X:

This generation was labeled as being the first that was expected to be the first not to do better than their parents. They faced the job force during a recession and entered a workforce with changing technology. They were born during the Vietnam war who's parents were part of the selfish ME ME ME culture of the 80's

MTV Generation:

Born after Generation X. This generation grew up with MTV, video games, ect. This generation grew up with divorced parents, grew up as lach key kids, had parents who both worked, raised by single parents. This generation seemed to be very bitter from all of the faults of the previous generations.

Millennial Generation:

Were born between 1980-1995. This is the tech savy generation (computers, internet, cell phones, ipod, ect) They are viewed as being lazy and carefree due to the fact that they were pampered as children. Pampered as in getting awards for participating in sports or activities as little kids. They are looked at as being a generation that cares less about career ambitions and care more about family, friends, and high tech material gadgets.

Generation X is a theory that was taken over by the media to market plastic crap to morons....

classic generational theory relates 20 years as a generation. I personally feel after the Gen X generations span smaller periods of time 10-15 yrs. this is due to the rapid changes in our culture based on technology.

The term generation X
It actually applies to the late generation baby boomers who were in a cultural void-post Vietnam, pre-mtv- computer age.
it also crosses over into the early generation of 13'ers (13 th gen to occur in USA) 1966-1986. some people also refer to the 13'ers as mtv'ers
gen x roughly covers people born between 1960(ish) and 1970-75, think of it as a hyper generation that was symbolic of the great change that took place in our culture in the 50's and 60's

we are characterized by the invention of the slacker, punk and great distrust of the dominant culture...

caught also in an education gap what with new math and the onset of the computer age.
Socially gen x took a post hippie movement smack down and a forced return to 1950's conservative values hence punk and mistrust

I concur with previous answer of Gen Y. The next after that is being debated still, but commonly referred to as the iGen.
