Do you mean that lame modern remake that starred Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes? Yeah, that movie sucked the big one.
You should have your teacher play the version from '68 that starred Olivia Hussey and Leonard Whiting. That one is a great movie.

This movie was really good from a film students perspective. Baz Luhrmanns interpretation is very elusive and precise. The opening alone has soo much that you can pipck out. The whole newscaster opening is the original scripted version of the prologue but it actually seems like she could be saying it on the news. How we are made to side with the Montagues at the beginning of the film but perhaps we are neutral in the actual script. Capulets seem more fierce throughout. The gas station scene immitates an old spagetti western style shoot out. There is little symbols and motiffs that are used through the film - The two buildings of Capulet and Montague are of equal size so neither has more power over the other. Tybalt looks very cat like - The teeth, the little cats on his shoes. The sound is very different to conventional cinema. its a classic of a classic.

English major and huge fan of The Bard and I loved that movie. Of course the acting was ham-handed and over the top. That's how Shakespear is supposed to be performed (although Claire Daines was a little weak). All the purists I know panned the flick but I'm comfortable in my opinion that Billy would have approved. He wrote for the masses. It sounds all hoity-toity to us today, but Shakespear was The Matrix of his day. He made his stuff fun /and/ deep. This is very hard to do. If you want to see a more somber updating of a Shakespeare play, check out Titus.

Shakespeare is definately not my cup of tea..but I did like that movie. Because it was so odd (a twisted modern day rendition)..I think that's what kept my interest.

I have seen it and I liked it. It wasn't a movie I would jump up and down to go see but it was watchable.
