Hi:

I use plastic cling wrap and wrap it around the object than I apply about five layer of paper mache strips around it, allow it to dry overnight, than cut it lenghtwise , Reassemble it together without the object, apply five layer of fresh Paper mache strips, dry over night then continue with whatever steps you want to it with. ( this work with glass as well)

Try coating the clay with a layer of the glue or whatever it is that you plan to use to make the mache sticky. let it dry and apply one more coat. I had the same problem once but my grandma taught this trick and it seems to work as long as your paste is sufficient. When the second coat is roughly half way dry began applying the paper to the clay. good luck.

I think you would have better luck wrapping your paper mache around the clay object so that it hangs on.

Well, there's always plaster. Are you looking for something weather-proof? What do you mean by 'lasts?' Paper mache lasts a long time if you make it heavy enough (hell, even if you don't) and are careful with it.
