Texas

According to Wikipeida: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas
"Area Ranked 2nd: Total 261,797 sq mi (678,051 km²)

According to Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alaska
"Area Ranked 1st: Total 663,267 sq mi (1,717,855 km²)"

Of course if you brought Alaska down to the latitude of Texas to compare the land masses at least 1/3 of it would melt making it smaller (loyal Texan). Texas is also the only state in the Union that has federal permission to divide itself into smaller states if it so desires. This happened because we were our own country for almost 7 years before we joined the Union. Of course there was that little disagreement when we tried to leave the union, but lets not go there.

Alaska also has the highest mountian in North America: Highest point Mount McKinley 20,320 ft (6,193.7 m)

Here are the top 5, with their area in Square Miles: 1 Alaska 567,400 2 Texas 261,797 3 California 155,959 4 Montana 145,552 5 New Mexico 121,356 Alaska wins by far; but, because you said '48' states, I'm assuming your question is limited in scope to the 48 contiguous states. In that case, you're looking for Texas
