Knowledge. People need to find out the facts about how the system has actually worked. You don't have to condone brutal crimes or want the criminals who commit them to avoid a harsh punishment to ask whether the death penalty prevents or even reduces crime and whether it risks killing innocent people.

124 people on death rows have been released with proof that they were wrongfully convicted. DNA is available in less than 10% of all homicides and isn’t a guarantee we won’t execute innocent people.

The death penalty doesn't prevent others from committing murder. No reputable study shows the death penalty to be a deterrent. To be a deterrent a punishment must be sure and swift. The death penalty is neither. Homicide rates are higher in states and regions that have it than in states that don’t.

We have a good alternative. Life without parole is now on the books in 48 states. It means what it says. It is sure and swift and rarely appealed. Life without parole is less expensive than the death penalty.

The death penalty costs much more than life in prison, mostly because of the legal process which is supposed to prevent executions of innocent people.

The death penalty isn't reserved for the worst crimes, but for defendants with the worst lawyers. It doesn't apply to people with money. When is the last time a wealthy person was on death row, let alone executed?

The death penalty doesn't necessarily help families of murder victims. Murder victim family members across the country argue that the drawn-out death penalty process is painful for them and that life without parole is an appropriate alternative.

Problems with speeding up the process. Over 50 of the innocent people released from death row had already served over a decade. If the process is speeded up we are sure to execute an innocent person.

Capital punishment is SUCH A WASTE at this point and time in its current form. It serves as no deterrent at all, since the punishment is metted out a dozen years or more after the crime has been prosecuted! It has no deterrent factor at all anymore.

Please don't get me wrong, I would gladly be executioner myself for a lot of these walking pieces of filth. I support thinning the herd and getting rid of those who can't play nice in the sandbox, but the current system is broken beyond repair.

I for one think it is a shame that more criminals aren't "shot while attempting escape." Think of that wretch Cooey who killed little Jessica Lunsford. Why should he get to enjoy one single more day on earth. I guarantee you the prison he is in (and will be in for 10+ years) provides him a higher standard of living than he was used to in that crappy little trailer. Damn shame he wasn't found face down in the Homassassa river (sp?)

As far as killing capital punishment is concerned, just let it continue on the way it is heading. With all the liberal challenges to every execution method, eventually the only legally humane way to execute someone will be to let people die of old age.

For people to realize that capital punishment is more costly than having a prisoner spend his/her life in prison.
*The excessive cost is a function of the mandatory appeal process. If you really want to punish, let them languish in prison until they die.

Write letters to your governor and your state representative. Explain to them why you oppose capital punishment.

Take it back out on the streets where the public can see the hangings. Perhaps this will make people think twice or a third time before committing a terrible crime.

'Shoot to kill the men of violence'
Possibly bore it to death in Congress?
We don't actually have proper capital punishment, we mostly have the slow mental torture of 'Death Row', made worse by weekly meeting with lawyers.
