The Writers guild wants a pay raise for their members, as they haven't had one for some time.
All the people who write the material....jokes, dialogue, scripts, concepts, etc.....they stopped working. No working...no new tv shows and movies....a little time....RERUNS.
What this means to you and me? Less quality in TV programming, and 3 more bucks per ticket at the theatre box office.
It's like if a car factory went on strike. Sure, they have some backstock, but sooner or later they run out of cars, since nobody is making them.

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) is a union for writers (mostly film and television writers are portrayed on the news lately).
It is really no different than the Unions for Airlines, steel workers etc. etc.
Basically no WGA writers are writing new scripts for television or film until the dispute is solved (among other types of writing but the most prevalent being film and television)
hope this helps.

The writers want residual money for various cable and reruns on shows they worked on.
At the present time they are only compensation for the original show.

i think it the people who write for tv shows that are going on strike. but most of the major hit shows have enough episodes witten to carry them out for the rest of the season.

Big corporations are pissed off that their writers aren't getting paid for illegal downloads and losing money to the Internet, so they said "Screw the fans, we want our cash". That's all. a fight over money.
