I wouldn't think it'd be WRONG because I've heard that too..
But (in today's society) Asians come from Asia
and Native Americans... are the real Americans
I think it shouldn't matter what you decide to call yourself though

Technically, yes, it would be inaccurate to claim an Asian ancestry, because you cannot trace your family tree back to a specific immigrant from Asia.
Native tribes on the American continent did originally migrate to the Americas over the land bridge between Asia and what is now Alaska, but that was thousands of years ago, when wooly mammoths still roamed. So a modern Native American is no more Asian than a modern European is Middle Eastern.
This is evolution, which is ancestry in the grandest scale - if you want to claim a specific heritage, you need to prove a direct descent to you as an individual from a specific individual of that heritage.

I don't see why it would be 'wrong', it's widely known that 30000 years ago, Asiatic people crossed Beringia into North America and eventually became the Native American people.
I wouldn't say 'Asian' so much as 'Asiatic'; the term 'Asian' refers directly to the people that come from Asia, while 'Asiatic' is more of a geographical reference. As a Native American, I would think your ethnic commonalities with Asian people ended when your ancestors crossed the land bridge.
We all come from somewhere, though. I'm sure all of us could claim African considering Africa is the mother-land of life, but it would be a stretch for those of us that haven't had someone within the last 4 generations actually FROM Africa.
Like I said, it wouldn't be 'wrong' to claim Asian ancestry; it would just seem a little misleading to someone who isn't aware of historical migrations, which gives you a great opportunity to put the reference in context for them.
Hope this helps

the challenge is the time period interior sight American is extremely ambiguous. in case you crack open a dictionary it refers to all and sundry indigenous to the americas and there are 2 continents with the call. I frequently say i'm section Mexican interior sight it extremely is the reality. i do not confer with myself ever as American Indian. my own tribe faces many similar situations as do natives contained in the U.S. regrettably to say and some issues are diverse. the completed reality is that tribes on both the north and south american continent are dealt with like crap. i do not take advantage of something economic smart and do not favor to both. notwithstanding i can say that i can comprehend a number of their plights i do not declare to understand all. the actual shown reality that my own tribe has confronted violence, and unlawful use of resources has similarities besides as prejudisms hostile to natives. i'm absolutely a million/4 interior sight and the actual shown reality that i can music my ancestry isn't a topic yet as I said I not in any respect ever declare to be an american indian i'm no longer that conceited.

The original population of North American did cross from Asia when the Bering Straits were a land-bridge.
But GIGO is right ... we are all Africans.
