I'm making a compilation of Christmas songs, and I'm trying to use only the definitive, or most popular, recordings. I thought I had "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" narrowed down to Burl Ives' and Gene Autry's editions, but then I discovered Burl Ives recorded two versions of "Rudolph," one for the soundtrack and the other for his album, "Have a Holly Jolly Christmas." Anybody know which one is definitive?

The Burl Ives' one from "Have A Holly Jolly Christmas" for me is the standard. Gene Autry will always have the country fans, but for me the universal one is Mr. Ives' work.

I prefer Gene Autry's version- the original version.

But, I think, most people are familiar with Burl Ives' version from the t.v. special.

I always liked the Gene Autry version. I still have the record.
