I am drawing a blank about how much water I am supposed to drink today before I go for my scan... I don't want to mess it up and not have enough, I really want to see the baby today! Havn't done this is a few years, and I don't think my Dr. told me how much to have. Any help would be great! Thanks!

Also, Can I have milk and juice as well instead of just water? I would assume so...

It all depends on what type of OB ultrasound (transabdominally or vaginally) and how far along you are in your pregnancy. The best thing to do is to call the facility where you are scheduled, and ask them. You would hate to show up for your appointment ill-prepared and be rescheduled, or worse, have a substandard study!

Where I work, in CA, we ask our first trimester patients to drink 32 oz of water, in a thirty minute time period, one hour before the exam. So, if you appointment was at 11:00, we would want you to drink all the water between 9:30 and 10:00. If you are too early in your pregnancy, we would have you empty your bladder, and switch to a vaginal u/s. Some facilities start with a vaginal u/s, so there is no need for water. After week 16, we do not ask women to drink water for their u/s. This will vary between facilities, so make that call!

Instead of water, clear juice is fine, but milk and carbonated drinks are not! Milk and fuzzy drinks will increase the amount of gas in your intestinal tract, and that can interfer with your u/s study.

I was told to drink 32 oz. of water before my ultrasound today (7 wks). Also, a glass of orange juice/milk will be fine and count towards your 32 oz. Orange juice would be better because it contains sugar and will help get the baby moving around. I'm going to stick with the water and eat a candy bar to get my sugar up (I've heard that candy is good to have before u/s's).

If you're really unsure, it wouldn't hurt to call the Dr. and ask.

it depends on how far along you are. if you are early on, i believe it's 32oz of water within 5 minutes, an hour and a half before the apointment (i could be wrong...something like that). I jsut had my 20 week ultrasound and i didn't have to drink water. you only do at the beginning because the baby is so small. once you get bigger, they can find the baby much easier.

good luck :)

p.s.-they say water because it goes through your system faster, but juice should be fine.

My fiancé was told to drink 2-3 pints of water before her scan the other week, she only drank one pint & her bladder did half obsure the view of "Bump".

I'd suggest drinking the recommended amount

Edit: The ultrasound nurse said to Jay that milk acted more as a food than a liquid and was better to drink water or juice.

If they didnt tell you to drink water, then you dont have to. I have had five ultrasounds this pregnancy and not once have I had to drink water and all of them came out fine. All the way from 9 weeks to now.

I dont see why you wouldnt be able to drink milk or juice. Trust me if the doctor wanted you to have a full bladder or anything, they would have told you already. Have fun

I am going to have a total of 3 ultrasounds (which sucks but anyway) The first time I went I had to drink 32 oz. The second and third was 24 oz. I drink whatever I can get my hands on. I can't drink plain water without getting sick and they have not had a problem seeing him. : )

it is 8 glasses of 8 oz of water, somewhat clear juice is ok, like apple juice i would assume. i have never drank the whole required amount. its too hard to hold that much pee for 2 hours then have the pushing on your tummy. Most likely the will have you try and emply some out anyways, and that hard to only empty a little. i have done half the amount with no problems

I had my scan on 30th October at 10 weeks, my Doc suggested I only needed a litre of any fluid, water, milk or juice. I did this but as soon as I got to the hospital they asked me for a wee sample, although I didnt wee a litre, lol! The scan was really perfect and clear! you have already had your scan by now, av just noticed you put today!!! Howd it go? x

When I went it was about 25 to 30 oz of water 30 minutes before your sono. Also my doc told me that it could be water, pop, tea, or juice. Just make sure you finish it 30 min. before sono and don't go to the bathroom. Good luck

They don't say you have to drink water any more but it used to be 2Pt's of water, i always buy a bottle of water and drink it on my way there, they have never said that i have not drunk enough, as long as your bladder is full it makes things clearer but scanning machines are so much better now i don't think it makes much difference.
Good Luck
