It has been my experiance that the guard dose get in the way, however I know that my insurace will not cover me or my guys if the proper saftey equipment is not in place.
Also if one pays attention to what they are doing then in most cases thing will be fine. I constantly yell at my guys to PAY ATTENTION.
99.9% of accedents could be avoided if people just learn to PAY ATTENTION ( the worst things happen to the guy that dose not watch what he is doing)

It's true, the guard will get in the way in the same way as your fingers could get in the way and be removed.
Ask yourself which body parts you could lose and ask how valuable they are to you. If the body parts won't be missed, work without the guard, if they will, use it.
The practical alternative is to glue a small cat or a kitten in place of the guard which should work well as a guard but squirm out of the way when you're moving. Kitty will also make a great cushion for smoke breaks - and if it should pass away from shock, it'd make a super snack cooked on the BBQ.

He puts you all into a difficult position. Are you happy to help him and his severed hand or fingers. Would you know what to do if such an accident happened. He cannot take full responsibility as he would be in no position to do so. Even if you do know how to handle such a situation he could bleed to death in minutes without specialised care. He should use a guard and probably eye protection as well. The health and safety executive are sometimes foolish in their requirements such as no conkers played in schools but on this one they are dead right.

He could be breaking health, safety and welfare at work acts if this is a workplace,,,If he did have an accident his works insurance would be voided,,however if it is at home then common sense would tell you that a guard is better then losing your hand,,,,I had a very bad accident many years ago that was a combination of my fault and bad communication,,I didn`t get to badly hurt but since then (about 1983) I have never ever put my life or safety at any risk,,,,

I would get the clerk to make a assertion, after which file a grievance with the mall administration. Even if you dont get any fiscal gain for your self, that you can be certain that those all cops are handled in order that nobody else has to go by way of what you did. On prime of embarrasing, it was once damaging. What if a fire had damaged out? They would've been busy, and might have forgotten you. Then they'd be coping with homicide rather of unlawful confinement.

Those safety guards are put there for a reason, safety. Your friend is an accident waiting to happen.
If this is at work, his employer can be in a huge amount of trouble if he allows this to continue and he gets hurt, regardless if your friend says he will take full repsonsibility.

I would like to say keep the guard on at all times but unless I am cutting 8x4 sheets of plywood mine is off the machine. Given that all guards must allow the wood through, they can just as easily allow your hand through as well. Personally I like to see where my body parts are in relation to the blade.

This person is irresponsible and not only leaving himself open for injury, but, also leaving the Company opened for a huge lawsuit or Workman's Comp claim, which they do not want. Safety is a company's #1 priority to its employees, and if you are concerned, then you need to report this to Safety Director and they will have a guard installed, not him, personally. This has to be dealt with ASAP.

USE A GUARD!!!! Being complacent leads to accidents, no matter how experienced you may be at using the tool. Taking a minute longer is better than losing a finger (or worse)
