You can do timed writing, where you set a timer, then write for the whole time, writing anything that pops into your mind, and keeping the pen moving the whole time. Interesting stuff pops out when you do this.

You can close your eyes for a few minutes and picture a room from your past, then write down everything you remember in the room, how it made you feel, the people, the place, etc.

Write your dreams. You might think you don't dream, but chances are that if you start with: Last night I dreamt... something will pop up. Furthermore, if you get in the habit of writing your dreams regularly, you will remember more and more of them.

Write a letter. It doesn't have to be a letter you will send. If you tell yourself beforehand that you won't send the letter, chances are that you will be more open with the contents of the letter. You might edit it and send part. Either way, you will likely gain insight into your feelings towards the person you are writing the letter to.

Grab a copy of Natalie Goldberg's Freeing The Writer Within. She has a ton of great ideas to get the juices flowing.

make up a word, then come up with its definition.

write about something in your childhood; your favorite activity, your best friend, best place to hide in your house, etc.

pretend you are an animal and write from that perspective.

pretend you are an inanimate object, like a shoe, coffee table, book in a library, and write about what it's like. such as, you are the loneliest book in the library, no one so much as walks past your aisle, and so on.

set a timer for one minute, or even 5 minutes and write down as many words as you possibly can.

glance at a newspaper or magazine headline, do not read the article, but write a whole article yourself, just based on what you get from the headline itself. example: local firefighter finds 9. was the firefighter male or female, what was it 9 of that they found, or is 9 a place rather than things, etc.

~Get a list of random words and string them together in a coherent story.
~Get a random line of dialogue and use it as the start of a story (the more outrageous the better)
~Watch a sitcom with the sound turned off (preferably one which you've never seen before, or know the characters from) and write what you think is happening.
~Write descriptive paragraphs about people you see at the mall, including histories and likes and dislikes

Good luck!

Think of the most interesting occurence you've seen (or heard about) in the last 24 hours and force yourself to write at least 250 words to describe it. Don't worry about quality, just worry about writing (you can always edit later).

My favorite exercise to do when I can't think what to write is start with "I remember..." Then continue the sentence with whatever pops in to your head first. Describe what you remember, be sure to include all of your senses in the memory. They great part is, it's a different exercise everytime.

Have fun :-)

you can write about the dream you hope to enter into your subconscious the next time you'll have your long snooze. ( i am thinking that you'll dream of it, it's like shaping your dream before you sleep)
