that when you are on the pill, you can skip the last pills that coincide with your period (mine happen to be green), and just start with a new pack once your period is over and still be protected against pregnancy?

the last week of pills in the pack are just fake pills. They have nothing in them. YOu can skip them as long as you start taking the new pack after the 7 days.
they only reason they are there is to keep you in the habit of taking them on a reg basis

If you mean the inactive pills that you take during your pregnancy then yes you can skip them. They are just placebos that you take so you don't get out of the habit of taking the pill at the same time every day. You should be taking 3 weeks (21 days) of active pills and 1 week (7 days) of inactive pill during your period. As long as you take the 3 weeks of active pills and don't forget to start taking the next pack 7 days later (even if you are still having your period) then you will be fine. If your period only last 5 days, you should still wait 7 days before you start the next pack.

When I was on the pill, my last pills were brown, and the doctor told me that they were blank pills. I use to skip the blank pills all the time and start with a new pack when I wanted to skip my period (that actually works!!!) I highly recommend however that you double check with you doctor first. If you don't have time to make a visit, just call your doctor's office and ask a nurse. I'm sure they will be able to assist you with this type of question over the phone. Just make sure you have the brand that you use at hand.

I took the pill for 6 years, and that's exactly what I did.

My doc told me the green pills were just "reminder" pills... they just want you to take them so you'll remember to take them every day at the same time.

I never once took my green pills, always just had my period and no pills that week, then started a new pack the following week.

If they are the ones that coincide with your period, then yes as all they are there for is to remind you to take the pill everyday. The other pills are there to tell your body that you are pregnant and the last 7 (I believe) are there to tell your body your not hence the reason you get your period.

From what I know about the contraceptive pill, if you continue to take the next pack without having a period you can 'skip' a period for that month and be fully protected against pregnancy. Im not a trained doctor though from my personal experience it works fine! But it is not advisable to do it for more than two months.

The last week of pills are placebos (USUALLY) to make it easier for you to keep the habit of taking the pill. It depends on what pill it is but just talk to your doctor who prescribed them to you. My dad is a doctor and goes over this with every girl he prescribes it to. This was for Ortho tri cyclen and Aviane.

The pills that you are supposed to take when your on your period week are sugar pills. They are just there to help you to keep remembering to take your pills. I don't ever take mine and just start my new pack the next Sunday.

Yes, my doctor told me that the green pills (at least in the 28-day cycle Ortho Novum that I used to take) are only sugar pills/placebos...no medication/hormones in them. They are in the packet to help you remember to be in the habit of taking a pill everyday. They do not contain any hormones in them b/c that way your body can have a period. Good question!

Some people skip the last week of inactive pills to avoid a period.

You're still protected against pregancy. I'd talk to your doctor before you start messing around with your pills--some kinds cannot be played with or you will get sick.
