toilet is very slow to flush... (tank fills up fine, thats OK)

I think something is stuck....getting kind of stinky.....?
Tried the plunger several times and it has stopped it overflowing so far (thank god) but still fills up to the rim....... am I just not vigorous enough or can I use something else on it?

You have something clogging the toilet passage way. You need to use a toilet snake since the plunger isn't working for you.

It could be the toliet trap clogged or the line going from the toilet. I would start by renting a Closet Auger. This is a hand tool that will run a heavy cable through the trap of the toilet and usually remove any blockages. It has a plactic sleeve on it to protect the surface of the toilet. Do not use any caustic chemical in the toilet. Most get very hot and can break the bowl. If you need a chemical, try Draincare by Zep. It is an enzyme cleaner. Safe for all plumbing systems. Enzyme cleaners work by clinging to and eating any organic matter (no tree roots). Follow the directions on the container.

Dump a packet of yeast in the tank of your commode now and once a year. It will do wonders for your septic. Don't flush tampax, the strings wrap around roots and things and eveentually causes a clog or back up. You may also want to check into a new seal under your stool. Or, replace the entire stool. If its 10 yrs or older it may be time for new. If its stopped up with an object, try using a "snake tool" to free the item.
