I have discretion, so I use it to decide what shows I like, and there are many I do and many I don't!
My favorite right now is The Reaper.
My all time fave is The Andy Griffith Show
tastes vary, that is why there are so many choices.
If we used government discretion or evangelical Christian discretion many shows might not be on, but this way each viewer decides what he or she likes.

It's a meaningless expression used as a legal disclaimer. It roughly translates into "Warning: The following program contains language that has arbitrarily been determined to be offensive, and/or -*gasp*- nudity. If these are not things you feel prepared to cope with, turn your TV off or switch the channel." While we're on the subject, there's a euphemism that I abhor far more than "Viewer discretion is advised", and that's "Edited for Content". The latter is code for censorship, to appease the Pat Robertsons of the world. Evidently many people feel that tip-toeing around their take on what is or isn't offensive/appropriate is compatible with a democracy worthy of the name.

"Viewer discretion" means that they want you to watch really close so you can enjoy the graphic parts, which is what the majority of the viewers want to see, even if it's just so they can complain about it later.

Its at the viewers discretion to watch.l They are saying its up to you to watch, if you didnt like it or were gorssed out or whatever you cant blame us, we warned you. People wanna sue for ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING!
Thats why things have warnings because something happened or someone did something "stupid" got hurt and they had to write a warning.
Like the lady who sued McDonalds for spilling HOT COffEE on herself, iced coffee wasnt out then. if she is a coffee drinker she knows it comes HOt not COLD

I think that they are saying that there might be scenes that you would be uncomfortable with and you need to decide if you would want to watch that or not - an example of this is Dr. G - she is a medical examiner and preforms autopsies ( cuts people open to find out how they died) on people. This means that if you might be uncomfortable with the sight of blood, then you might want to watch something else. I hope that this makes sense.

it's a way to point out the obvious.
If you don't like the show, don't yell at us, we warned you.
