I am seriously thinking the only safe thing is the pet rock...then again one of them would just smash the other in the head with it.

Socks and underwear are safe, but he'll hate you for the rest of his life. Ironically, you might be safer buying those "dangerous" toys from the '60s, like a wood engraving kit, a pellet gun, or huge lawn darts. Since you're from the South, might I suggest one of these:

Now a days I think anything could kill him. Get him NOTHING and just tell him it's because you love him. I'm sure a 5 year old would understand THAT.

Um I think some string is still safe as long as it is not manufactured in China. But there is always the risk of strangulation. Dominoes, I have some here you can give him. I'm bored with them already.
