If this will be your first time out snowboarding- welcome to the sport! It's a friggin' blast. It might be difficult at first, but stick with it. Once you get the hang of it, you'll be hooked.
Here is my list.
Don't do:
• With your board going down hill faster then you expected, don't lean back, lifting up the front of your board. This is called a "wheelie" when done on purpose, but usually seen by folks panicking. This will only cause your board to go faster, but now with less control. Turn (called "checking") to slow down.
• Don't try to stop yourself with your hands when you fall!!! Just go with it. Trying to break your fall with your hands will only get you sprained or broken wrists and possible hurt other parts, like your shoulders. Rolling is good to help disperse the momentum- just go with the flow. That's what it's all about.
• Don't wear jeans. Invest in some god winter apparel. If this is something you plan to do a lot, get a good, durable, warm, but thin snowboarding pants. You can get a good pair for $40. If this will be a 1 or 2 time event, even a $15 overall style pant from Target is a HELL of a lot better then hitting the slopes in jeans. If you don't have things like water proof gloves and such, either get them, or bring multiple pairs so you can change when they get wet. Socks too!
• Look before you leap. If you take to jumping off of things- know what and who is below you. Even if you aren't to that point, this is good advice to keep in mind when crossing runs, going around blind corners, etc.
• Don't mow over people. The people in front of you have the right of way.
• Don't get discouraged.
• Don't lean so much. Most of your control over your steering will come from your feet, not by leaning your whole body. I've seen a lot of newbies try to lean over to try to turn and only end up catching edges and biting it.
• Don't hesitate to tell the lift operator if you are new to getting on the chair. You might even ask him to slow it down for a moment to help you get on. Most lift operators are pretty friendly and helpful. If you do fall while getting on a lift chair, don't get back up immediately- you can really get whacked in the head by those steel chairs.
• If you have your own board, don't forget to tune and wax it before hitting the slopes. Tip: do a search on YouTube- there's a few good instructional how-to for snowboard tuning and maintenance.
• Don't forget to stay hydrated. You'll sweat more then you think.
• If you are buying your own equipment, DON'T cheap out. You don't have to break the bank, but a $20 board from WalMart, ain't gonna cut it. TIP: if this is your first time out an d you want your own stuff, try Ebay for deals on used gear. Sometimes you can get a used set up for what it would cost for a couple times renting. And rentals are horrible.
• Don't forget to take a lesson. Some slopes even have beginner packages, but a lesson is priceless and while there is an up front cost, you'll be enjoying more of the slopes faster and less time on your *** (although falling is still part of learning), then if you tried to figure it all out on your own.
• Don't think so much. Like when you get to the top of the slope and you are looking down thinking "What the hell am I doing up here? This is going to be fast! I'm going to fall. Are those trees?" Be smart, but don't think about it. Snowboarding is as much mental as it is physical and your brain can do a good job of over thinking things. So don't think so much- just go for it.
• DO consider a helmet. Esp. when you start to really push yourself. I've crashed my head hard more then a few times- they wouldn't have ended well if it weren't for the brain
basket.
Hope this helps some and good luck.
