Hi...you don't say how old he is, so I am going to assume by your question that he is under the age of one.
Melissa & Doug is a brand of toy that you can find almost anywhere (they are made very well). they offer tons of educational type toys that deal with occupational therapy (fine motor skills) that would be nice. also Discovery toys has a lot of very nice things. if your grandson is a bit older and working on walking soon you might want to look into push toy walkers. but be careful if you go this route, they need to be heavy enough to support your grandson when he tries to get into a standing position. another option too is to get the phone number to his therapists if he is in the Birth to 3 (or Early Intervention Program) and ask them what would be good for him at this stage in his development. My son is just about 4 yrs old now and is still into stacking blocks (and knocking them over...lol), Leggos, as well as matchbox cars and trucks...so for me it is now easy to buy him christmas presents! Happy shopping!! I hope you have a wonderful holiday with your family!!

I would buy him some functional toys that will help his motor skills and development skills. Like the big colorful giant legos (you can get them at ToysRUs) or 20-30 piece puzzles (I found a pack of 4 at Walmart). I agree the toys should be age appropriate but children with Downs Syndrome progress much slower than "normal" children, so any minute you can use to give/teach vocabulary is great.

"new" as in just born? I would ask his mother/father if you could start a special savings fund which could grow and be there for extra speech therapy, or physical therapy should he need it later on. He will love anything Grandma gives him in toys but a parent's greatest concern is who will take care of him should he out live his parents. A trust fund (whatever) would be something you could contribute to annually and help for the future.

My brother has Downs. When he was a baby, we would buy him toys that were visually stimulating and toys to work on his motor skills. Bright colors are great. Try these links and see if they help...good luck!!

All he needs is tender loving care, and having people pray for him to grow up and be the best gentleman that he can be.
I will pray for him. And God Bless You and Your son.

There is - your grandchild needs lots of love and time, laughter and attention. Ased from that he needs to be treated like every other child. He will learn and grow just like other children at his own rate.

Does he enjoy going to sporting events & socializing with people?
Maybe say to him I will take you out to a professional baseball game in the spring or even take him out the movies during school vacation!

He is like any other child, even though he has downs, don't treat him any different, he will go through the same process as any "normal" child" he just has a few problems.
