I've answered similar questions about this before. If that is the way you feel about marriage, then don't get married. I don't' know how you would be able to plan for a future if you weren't willing to promise to be together for life. How would you enter into a mortgage, or even buy a new car, with some car loans being 7 years now. Who would get what? How could you plan of having children if you didn't plan on being with someone for life? There's too many complicated issues that would come up. I think it is too simple an answer to a very complicate problem. We have these issues with divorce, but they would be really bad if marriage automatically dissolved after 5, 7, or even 10 years. Another question would be: What if you agree to "resign" the marriage contract and 6 months later, change your mind. Would you be able to get out of the marriage 4 1/2 years early, or would you have to stay?
I think a better way to solve some of the issues would be to require marriage counseling every couple of years instead. Or before any major changes happen, like buying a house or having a child. Then the couple would learn communication skills and coping skills instead just giving up and divorcing.

In my situation right now,I would say "Yes"!!! It's a great Idea...Rather than suffer and stay with a cheater husband forever!who wouldn't wanna divorce even they're cheating on you.And use the Children as an excuse to save the marriage,But the fact that he just want a Nanny for them...And it's the best way to stop adultery in the future! After 5 years of marriage,You will not renew and leave! And marry the one whom you cheated with!...Guys would love this!I mean Those cheaters!!!

Why get married then? If you're just "leasing" your partner to see if it works then why even mess around with all the legal crap. Just live together and play house. Of course that big tax credit you get for being married won't affect you but who cares right? Personally I thinks it rediculous as it shows lack of long term commitment. Not to mention it's just another way to keep charging couples money. Every 5 years every married couple must pay to stay married. Sounds like a great deal for the government. I just don't see the point really. I mean, what if a couple honestly forgets to renew their license, they must be remarried again? Leave it to the government to take something simple and complicate it for a profit.

They already do this in France; it is called a "PACS" and is basically a civil contract. Very few weddings are conducted as part of a religious ceremony.
I think it would appeal to a small percentage of Americans, but most weddings in this country still have a religious context and take place in a church setting, where such a temporal civil contract will never catch on. We would need to experience a huge shift toward secular marriages for such a practice to become widespread.
And the people who are going to leave their spouses are going to do it regardless of how long their marriage "contract" specifies, whether it is five years or a lifetime.

Marriage wouldn't be dissolved...you would still have to have proceedings to divide up the marital assets! That is what divorce is! DIVORCE isn't the problem, the people not being able to agree on who gets what is the problem! Having a marriage license that expires won't decrease the court appearances for division of property and child custody.
That new law would be stupid and useless.

I really like the idea because I feel it will decrease the divorce rate in this country. If you're not happy, then you have an option to not renew your license after five years. It gives you the chance to really see if this marriage is for you.

Are you saying this law was been passed? If so, WHERE?
Or are you asking what people would think about a law about this being passed? Personally, I think it's a horrible idea. And if the goal is to avoid court, it wouldn't do that. Even though the marriage would automatically terminate, you'd still have to go to court to deal with division of assets, child custody/support, etc. Of course, this law would never be passed in the US anyway, so it’s a moot point.

I'm not a fan of any laws that pertains to marriage. I mean come on you get married and if you don't have a pre-nut, then its 50-50 of everything that's just absurd but whatever; that's other people's mistake.
I'm not sure how much it will help anyways since people usually get divorced about that time or earlier, but if it means skpping through paperwork related to a divorce then I'm sure it could help out.

Wow, they're milking us dry, aren't they. Renew your car registration, renew this, renew that. Let's just have divorce booths at state fairs. I mean, if we're going to make it easy for two people to disregard promises that they made, let's make it as easy as we can. Or maybe a new window at the DMV, "Divorce On The Dotted Line". Oh, and let's make it so you have to get a license to use a public restroom... I mean, A LOT of money can be made there.
Give me a break people. Where will it end?!

Do the kids produced in that marriage disappear too? That law would never work, too many other contracts involved. Divorce screws up enough stuff, let alone an expired marriage license!
