Bplans.com is a great site that provides a ton of free business plan templates. They just happen to have one on opening a mechanic's shop:

Tool expense = $ ?
(all your snap on stuff, lifts, oil buckets, etc)

Building expense = $ ?
(where your biz is, rent a garage or out of home)

Marketing expense = $ ?
(sign on building, biz cards, uniform company, flyers around town, sticker up your vehicle to advertise, office papers, computer, business programs or accountant, etc)

It really depends on you. You could get a basic $200 a month garage, get used lifts, tools, and use your wife or gf to do the books. In turn opening it all for as little as possible.

Or you could rent a place or even buy and have a rent of $3000 a month (bout size of a 3 bay Midas), hire a secretary, set up accounts with Snap on and Mac for tools, etc.

Plus it depends on what you already have.

Could be $1000 to $100,000 or even $300,000 or more if tools are not paid off or put on payments.

I do touch up paint work for car dealers. I started mine in the back of a honda accord with 17 bottles of paint and 2 paint brusheses. After my first day of work, I took that money and bought my compressor, etc. I built the company as I gained work. Today I have a blazer custom set up as a rolling mobile body shop with compressor, retractable air lines and 300 paints all on board.

Might work for you too. Be a mobile oil change guy or tire guy or even mobile mechanic. Something. Start off with just 1 item, as you get sales, built the company and grow it into what you want.

Sure beats flipping burgers or something saving up the money, might as well get in and get dirty and get paid some in the career you want. Before paint I did detailer for years to get my hands dirty. I had been an upper suit n tie management person prior.

Start with plannng a pre business budget to estimate: rent, equipment, utilities, salaries (employees not yours), insurances, marketing, inventories. Many lenders want 20% of your own s.u. costs paid by you and they lend the rest to you with 100% collateral to cover the loan they make to you.
