I always wondered if someone would ask that question. Some pregnant women (like a few of my friends) use their pregnancys as a excuse to eat more than they normally would, thinking that it will all go away after the baby is born, and blame all the weight gain on the baby, while they used the excuse 'eating for two.'
Some might also use it as the reason for why they pig out, and since that saying has been around for quite some time, no one says anything to the pregnant woman.
Also, they think that they really are eating for two, but as a misconception that they are eating for two grown people, which is where most women who use that mentality get confused with I believe. They only should be eating an extra 300 cal. to up to 500 more calories a day depending on their anatomy, and doctors orders (most cases it's only 300)

Because you need to eat an extra 300 calories for you and the baby to stay healthy. While some people think that they need to increase their intake by alot more than that, baby only takes in about 300 calories, anymore than that and you are going to be looking at a MUCh bigger you and a bigger baby. If you are carrying twins they usually say 600 extra and so on. However, as much as people want to pig out they should know that they extra 300 calories should be vitamin enriched food and yes the occasional craving for the sweet stuff is still ok. But, from experience if you want to keep your gall bladder do not eat a canoli a day.

It is a good reason to eat whatever they want... when in fact in the first trimester your body only requires about 100 more calories a day, and in your second and third it requires between 300-500 more per day, this is of course contingent upon your prepregnancy health, and weight, say if you are bigger you need less because fat s burned as calories, and if you are smaller you may require slightly more. But if you are having cravings they say that you should listen because 9 timesout of 10 it is your body telling you that it is lacking a vitamin or mineral.

Well some pregnant women believe that they should be eating for two people (their size). They're forgetting the baby inside of them isn't even a quarter of their size. A healthy pregnant women should only be consuming about 300 extra calories a day.

There is no need to "eat for two" its just what stupid women who didnt do their research or who want to eat whatever they want say.
Baby only needs extra 300 calories. So if you were eating 1200-1600 before, there is no way you would be doubling up and eating for two.
I can see the occasional day or so when you crave something, but not every craving should be given into.
I mean, how stupid of a pregnant woman do you have to be to give into your craving for donuts? or twinkies?--- yah the "baby" may want it, but is it really good for eather of you? And please dont say your lacking some vitamin or mineral the item provides, there is no Vitamin D(onut)

NO pregnant lady should be eating for TWO. You just have to eat more often and a lil bit more calories than usual... but you shouldn't over do it.
That's how pregnant mothers struggle losing the weight.

She's eating for herself and her baby. Technically, though, a pregnant woman really only needs to add about 500 calories to her diet (so she's really eating for 1 1/4 based off of the side of your cereal box daily nutritional values =P)

Technically eating for two is an old wives tale, BUT a pregnant woman's diet should include an extra 300 calories above what she would normally eat.
