He doesn't have a lift. We are going to go to the store and buy whatever he needs. My question is what should he be buying. We don't want to spend very much money. He's worried about lifting the transmission because it is so heavy.

What are some other things we are going to need also that we probably won't discover until we start working?

It is a 1999 chevy Cavalier

you dont need the lift seems like everyone doesnt think he can do it its pretty simple its not like he is tryin to rebuild it but taking one out and puttin it in is simple. you just need a jack stand to raise the car high enough to take it out. you could also use a jack stand to support the engine when its out so you arent buying any other expensive equipment that you wont be using again. all you need is a good floor jack and some tools.

Ok you didnt say if this was a new transmission or a used transmission so I am going to try to help you with both.
1 If this is a new transmission they usually come ready to install and providing your torgue convertor is in good shape all you should need would be the proper amount of transmission fluid. However installing a new torgue convertor would be best and may prevent trouble later down the road.
2 If you are using a used transmission that was pulled out of another car you will want to replace the seals & filter. Also transmissions are heavy so it would be best if he had a friend or 2 to come over to help. Because even if your strong enough to get it up to the engine you want be able to support it with 1 hand while trying to put the bolts in. It would also be a good idea to get a good floor jack to assist with lifting and holding. 1 more thing to make this as easy and cheap as possible. Make sure it is the proper transmission. I dont know why the manufacturer does it but there could be several different transmissions for the same car. Basically the same transmission with a different bolt pattern or important fittings in different locations. Good luck

This is a rather difficult job because of the limited space in which to work. The engine has to be supported and everything has to be disconnected from the transaxle. If he's not very experienced at car repair as is indicated by your question, I'd let someone else do it.
Her are some of the things needed. 4 heavy duty jack stands to get the car off the ground 20" or so.
another jack stand to support the engine while tranny is out, floor jack to lower and raise the tranny, and of course a good assortment of hand tools>

ok......this is a project ...esp. with no lift.

will have to do on ground,....on jackstands and use floor jack for lowering and lifting(watch those fingers)....trans comes down not engine up as someone suggested...but...will be pulling crossmember, probably one A (control) arm and driveshafts, rusted trans cooler lines( if applicable), transmission fluid lines, possable trans mount.... just to mention a few of the larger componants you will have to move to get to it. and sisne its a 99...rusted bolts will probably be an issure.

special tools will also prob be needed( snap ring remover for drive shafts, not sure if ball joint will have to drop out but i believe it is pressed if it does, and more that i cant think of ).

this is not really a do it yourself type job unless he has help....and that help should know what its doing. Have you checked with a local trans shop? ( or a national like AAmco)?
would be a definetly better expenditure of money ( as any future probs with the replaced tranny that you do yourself will probably not be honored for warranty..retailers usually claim installer error).

Alot of work. If ya go for it.....good luck.

For the lift problem just have a really really reliable tree around and you can use that along with a pully and jack up the engine with the tree, from there you can undo the bolts and drop the transmission. Walmart is the best place to buy small things, like a socket wrench n what not. if he has something to jack up the truck it will be easier to pull the transmission. Good luck!

Once the transmission goes, the vehicle must go. Just invest the money and buy a new car. You will avoid the headaches that will come once the work starts. Try the following site to find a new car.

You will need a lot of expensive tools to do it safley. It is very heavy and if you haven't done it before you really need someone who knows how.

You will actually spend less money by taking the car to a local transmission shop.

Plus they will give you a warranty.

Good luck

You should really have aprofessional fix the car. You will probably waste money on supplies and then have to take it to a shop anyway and your husband could actually cause MORE damage if he is not skilled in car repair. Plus he could seriously injure himself and you would incur medical cost.

Take some advice and take your car to a shop. You'll be money ahead

You should be planning on buying a new car when he trashes this one because he's clueless about how and wants to do it cheap.
