Banana plants grow well in clay soil because clay holds the water. Mango trees will grow in any fertile soil.

By nature, banana and mango are tropical jungle plants and the soil there is rather wet and 'poor'. However, everything needs nourishment, and the jungle floor is full of fallen leaves and natural muck from the many animals and plants/weeds.

Try to reproduce that, and he things will grow.
