Great poet.
It seems to me that he is using his poem to make a subtle criticism of the Soviet State.
They liked to pretend that it was the most perfect society in which to live and nobody had any problems but yevtushenko is saying that it is better to tell the truth even if it unpalatable because people know in their hearts when they are being lied to and will not forgive those who accept this situation without complaint.
